    Group migration in radical reactions follows one of two basic path­ways. For aldehydo, cyano, and aryl groups, migration takes place by a sequence of elementary reactions consisting of cyclization and β-fragmentation steps. (An example of this type of reaction is shown in Scheme 8 of Chapter 10). Group migration in esters is governed by a different mechanism, one that has been the subject of considerable investigation. To follow the progress in under­standing this reaction, it is useful to view the advances in mechan­istic discovery in a chrono­logical order.
