    Carboxylic acids cannot be converted directly into carboxyl radicals, but they can form these radicals indirectly. One method for indirect formation calls for converting the acid into its anion, which then is subjected to elec­trolysis (Scheme 22).95 Other indirect methods require formation of carbox­ylic acid derivatives, such as esters of N-hydroxypyridine-2-thione, com­pounds that pro­duce carboxyl radicals by photochemically initiated reaction (Scheme 23).96 Carboxyl radi­cals expel carbon dioxide to produce carbon-centered radicals (eq 22).
