3rd Quarter Chemistry Honors (CHE 2CH) Topics
Chapter references are for Oxtoby, 6th edition
Unit I: Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure It is a "no brainer" to say that molecules are constructed of elements from the periodic table. These molecules can be separated into either organic or inorganic depending of which elements are used. The term organic is used to reference molecules that are primarily based on carbon, while the rest of the molecules are "inorganic." Although useful for study and research, this separation is not black/white as are most "rules" in chemistry. | Unit III: Rates of Chemical Reactions Thermodynamics, equilibria, and electrochemistry are three sides of the same coin. Now, kinetics is the fourth side. After this chapter is mastered, the connection of all four subjects will be known. |
Unit II: Electrochemistry: The Study of Shifting Electrons In this chapter, the married subjects of thermodynamics and equilibrium will be expanded to a troika by including electrochemistry. The ability to "steal" and "donate" electrons will be introduced and discussed in the context of free energies, enthalpies, entropies and equilibrium constants. | Unit IV: Spectroscopies: Viewing the World through Light |
